Project Description
Uganda, like many sub-Saharan African countries, faces major challenges in providing quality and accessible basic education to children and adolescents. Poor education affects health awareness and respect for the rights of children, women and people with disease. Only 10% of the children between 3 and 5 years of age are enrolled in pre-primary education. This means that out of 100 children, 90 are not involved in any educational program. Many children do not complete their schooling: only 1 in 4 children who start primary school make it to secondary school. Less than half (40 percent) of students are literate at the end of primary school. Children with disabilities are largely excluded from formal schooling because of shortages of special needs teachers and facilities. Secondary education is still inaccessible to most adolescents: early marriage, teenage pregnancy, abuse at schools and school fees keep many teens, especially girls, out of secondary schools. 24 % of Ugandan children have experienced sexual abuse in schools.
Uganda has the 14th highest absolute number of women married or in a union before the age of 18 in the world – 723.000.
In addition, 10.6% of currently married 15-19 years old girls are married to men who have two or more wives.
Customary marriages or informal marriages, where a girl lives with an older man, are significantly more common than registered civil or religious marriages.
Unfortunately, as a result of the Covid-19 crisis, child marriages are expected to rise in the next five years.
Our Goals
- Ensure girl-child education during adolescent period and help them achieve their fullest potential.
- Protect children and their rights
- Provide psychological care for children affected by war or abused.
- Build women’s capacity to promote their rights in the community.
- Promote sexual reproductive health and wellbeing as a cornerstone in sustainable human development.
- Increase access to cancer screening services and treatment support.
- Create and strengthen a multi-stakeholder local and national platform and referral network to increase awareness about HIV/AIDs and SRHR in northern Uganda by the end of December 2025.
- Engage public, decision-makers, and strategic influencers to take care of social and cultural norms that affect children, women, and young people.
